The Full Story

Chronicle Custom Woodworks

I think I shall never see
A poem as lovely as a tree.
- Joyce Kilmer

Wood, with its enduring strength and beauty, embodies the spirit of the earth from which it springs. Yet it is also part of our human spirit, connecting us to the world in which we live and build. It is not a lifeless material, but rather a living chronicle: stories written and read in its very grain. From primordial forests to the timbered halls of our greatest buildings, its presence has woven itself into the very fabric of our existence. To touch wood is to peer into the annals of the past, to hear the whispered echoes of ancient forests, and to feel the steadfast endurance of the mighty oak.

The skill and wonder of working with wood are unrivaled. Shaped by the rough hands of the craftsman, wood can not only become an object of utility, but a marvel of creation. In the workshop, amidst the scent of sawdust and the sound of the machines, the skilled craftsman draws forth the hidden beauty within the timber, transforming it into objects both useful and beautiful. To tell a story in wood  requires skill and wonder. Such work is a testament to human ingenuity and to the intimate connection we share with the natural world. These are the stories that stir the soul.

But wood is not merely a physical material. It is not only the form of wood that captivates the imagination, but the stories and history it carries within its very essence. They are our stories: each ring a record of years passed, each knot a narrative of survival and growth, each dent and worn edge speaks of journeys undertaken. It not only binds us to the earth but to the very fabric of our history, a constant reminder of our place within the great unfolding story of life. These treasures, imbued with the spirit of craftsmanship and with the wisdom of ages, chronicle the passage of time for generations yet to come.

In working with wood we keep alive the traditions of the past, shape the present, and lay the foundation for tales yet to be told.

“For there is hope for a tree,
if it be cut down, that it will sprout again,
and that its shoots will not cease.”
- Job 14:7

Christopher Krahn

Founder & General Manager

In the heart of our bustling woodworking haven (otherwise known as a dusty woodshop), amid the scent of freshly hewn timber and the sound of saws (and the constant droning of the dust collector), resides the indomitable artisan (cough) known as The Boss (insert fanfare). Hailing from the quaint hamlet of Neuanlage, Saskatchewan, he brings with him a tale woven with the threads of craftsmanship and a fervent zeal for the arts of woodcraft (and Scotch).

Raised beneath the watchful gaze of towering oaks (there were 3… and only 2 feet tall at the time) and the whispered secrets of ancient forests (some trees planted by my parents), Christopher forged his path through the annals of education, honing his skills with a keen eye and steady hand (nearly cutting my thumb off with a hand saw). From the venerable halls of My Dad Showed Me How and I Taught Myself, he emerged, armed not only with a diploma (nope, but I have all my fingers) but with a boundless passion for the craft that knows no bounds (well that’s at least correct).

Motivated by a relentless pursuit of excellence (and perhaps a touch of stubbornness), Christopher stands as a testament to the values we hold dear (better, I wrote them). With each stroke of the chisel and every whisper of the plane (don’t forget the 42” wide belt sander), he strives to transcend the mundane and elevate the ordinary to the extraordinary (though I may admit to the occasional mishap and miscalculated measurement). At the end of the day, through a lifetime of learning and practice (I read some books), Christopher stands ready to guide our clients through the labyrinth of choices and to uncover the story within each bespoke creation.

So, dear patron, when next you seek the hand of a master artisan (ahem, that’s a little much), look no further than Christopher. For in him, you shall find not just a woodworker, but a steward of timeless craftsmanship, ready to embark upon your journey of creation.

P.S. In his spare time (HA!) Christopher enjoys Scotch, scuba diving, history, and reading books by and about Winston Churchill.

P.P.S. My favourite is The Glenlivet 12, for those that owe me a bottle…
